Installing Floor Tile: Step-by-step Guide

Gather All the Materials & Tools
From where to start tiling a floor? We recommend you begin with organizing your space and gathering all the needed equipment and materials to do the DIY floor tile installation.

- Measuring tape;
- Tile spacers;
- Grout float;
- Notched trowel;
- Chalk line;
- Knee pads.

Connect a Cement Board Underlayment (optional)
Bear in mind that after setting floor tiles the will be 1/2″ higher as it used to be before installation. It can cause you some trouble if you didn’t keep in mind before buying materials and tools, and you may have to adjust the vanity, toilet, or any other things to compensate. For instance, it is a common trouble with bathrooms.
The next trouble can happen when you are installing it in the kitchen. Before you are going to install a ceramic tile floor look at all possible stuff under countertops (they must match and comply with the bottom of the counter and newly changed height of the tile floor. Also, pay your attention to the surface of the floor (it must be smooth), and it must stay still while you are walking across it. Only after checking all of it you may continue the DIY ceramic tile flooring process by installing a mortarboard underlayment.
How to Find the Center of Your Room?
To find the center spot of the room you will need to do the following steps:
- Make a measuring across the place and mark the middle of the room;
- Perform the same in another direction, mark up the center of the room;
- To point it out use a chalk line two central parts of the room (snap lines with a 90-degree crossing).
The crossing of the two lines is the center of the room will be your spot. It is an essential part of the floor tiling process.

Fitting Floor Tiles

Establish the Center Tile
Set the middle tile by taking the type of adhesive that is confirmed by the company. It can be a thin-set mortar or some producers will advise you to use a synthetic adhesive. Hold the notched side of the trowel and put it at a 45-degree angle adjusting it to the floor. Implement the adhesive to your floor.
How to Install Resting Tiles?
Apply the center tile as a source position, connect the remaining tiles in form of straight lines. Spread the adhesive for tiles 2-3. We recommend you to make installation only several tiles at once. What to do if it leaks up between tiles? Put the tile into the area you are using to fit adhesive. Point spacers among the tiles to stabilize the grout lines. Sometimes from installer needs to be done cutting tiles to the exact size for the end rows close to the walls of the room.
Leave the Adhesive to Restore
After putting tiles on the floor, give some time to cure. It may require an overnight or any other time suggested by the adhesive producer.
Prepare the Grout
Blend the grout to a proportion comparable with peanut butter. Grout is provided in a broad assortment of colors, and it can even be colored to harmonize your decor. To mix the grout ladle it onto the tiles, take and use a special rubber grout float to run into the connections. Spread the contestation with the float by an angle. It must be done to the grout lines to push the mixture as far as manageable into the joints.
Clean the Tile
