What Is the Game Horse?
The horse is a game using a basketball and a basketball net that can be played by two or more players. Unlike traditional basketball horse is only about shooting successful baskets instead of dribbling, keeping the ball away from the other team, or passing to members of your own team. Instead of active offense vs defense, it is more about personal technique and strategy. The starting player takes a shot and if it goes into the net the next player needs to try to make the shot in the same manner. If when the starting player shoots the ball doesn’t go into the net then the next player can decide upon a new way to make the shot.
Then the other players have to attempt to make that shot too. If everyone can accomplish the shot then no one gets a letter. If you miss a shot that the other player(s) made you will be given a letter starting with H until you get all the way to the word horse. The person who gets all of the letters in the word horse first is loses the game or is eliminated. Now we have a basic understanding but there might be more that you are curious to know about the game. In order to understand everything about how to play horse in basketball you simply need to know all of the rules.
Basketball Horse Rules
What are the rules of horse the basketball game? Every player must attempt to shoot the basketball into the net in the same way that the first player or the player who decided upon the method of shooting has done it. If the player deciding upon the way to shoot the basketball decides to shoot from twenty yards away and makes the shot, all of the players have to stand twenty yards away to attempt to make their shot. This means you can really get creative and try all sorts of shots, or focus on your opponent’s weak points and continue to make shots that are more challenging for them than for you. Ideally, you want to make the shot as similar to the person who does it first as you possibly can. This means using the same hand, throwing from the same spot at the same distance, and doing whatever kind of trick shot the first person successfully attempted. Just remember that attempting an impossibly difficult trick shot might simply result in you not getting it in the basket. If you’re playing with only one person then the first person to get all of the letters of horse loses the game. If you’re playing with more than two people, the last person to get to the word horse, or the last person left standing when all of the other players spell word horse, is the winner. Some people reverse the point system in the game horse so that if you get the shot when others don’t you are given a point and the first person to spell out the word horse is the winner. Other variations include pig instead of the horse which shortens the game or using any word you wish instead of a horse to either lengthen or shorten your playing time. The longer the word the longer your game is going to last.
Different Trick Shots to Try
There are a lot of fun trick shots that you can attempt when playing a horse to make it more interesting. Some trick shots that people enjoy can range from sitting down to make your shot to standing on the porch to make your shot. You can use your environment to your advantage and really get creative. If your basketball net is in a basketball court you can use the fence or the court floor to make interesting choices.
If it is a free-standing net in your backyard or on the street you can go super far away or use nearby furniture or structures to stand on to make your shot. You could also attempt to use your body in new ways to do a trick shot. You could throw the ball behind your back, throw it under your legs or swing it underhand and to the side. Whatever you do, be cautious about attempting to bounce the ball off of a surface to make your shot. This might end up damaging property around the area or hurting someone. It’s always fun to attempt to dunk during a game of horse, and you might find the game to be the perfect excuse to practice your dunking and trick shots with friends!
